Outside-the-waistband carry solves two different problems depending on who is carrying and why. A duty or range OWB holster prioritizes speed, modularity, and compatibility with war belts and plate carriers. A concealment OWB holster prioritizes a slim profile that hides under a jacket or untucked button-up while still providing faster access than most IWB options. The T.Rex Ironside OWB occupies the second role — it is a dedicated concealment holster built from thinner Kydex and designed to ride tight against the body at the 3–5 o’clock position, where it disappears under outerwear while offering a natural, ergonomic draw that many shooters find faster and more comfortable than appendix carry in cold-weather or jacket-friendly environments.
Understanding the Ironside requires understanding where it sits in the broader OWB lineup and why it exists as a distinct product rather than a variant of the Ragnarok.
The Problem the Ironside Solves
The Ragnarok is built from heavy-duty .125” Kydex. That thickness gives it the rigidity needed to bolt onto Safariland UBLs, QLS forks, Tek-Lok clamps, and every other duty or competition mount — but that same stiffness also makes it stand off the body. Mounted on belt loops, the Ragnarok works fine as a range or open-carry holster, but it was never optimized to tuck against the hip under a garment.
The Ironside uses .093” Kydex — roughly 25% thinner. That reduction changes the profile dramatically. The thinner shell wraps closer to the pistol, and when paired with 1.5” or 1.75” belt loops set at a factory +10 degrees of cant, it pulls in tight against the waist. The inside surface of the belt loops is textured to grip pant fabric, preventing the holster from shifting during normal movement. The result is a holster that conceals like an IWB setup but carries on the outside of the waistband, eliminating direct contact with the body and the associated comfort trade-offs of all-day IWB carry.
Design Details
The Ironside is precision-formed and CNC-machined following the same manufacturing philosophy applied across the entire holster line. CNC machines ensure consistent hole placement, cut dimensions, and geometry across every production unit — a deliberate investment that eliminates hand-trimmed variance and allows T.Rex to maintain the tight tolerances required for reliable passive retention.
Key specifications:
- Material: .093” precision-formed Kydex
- Cant range: -5° to +10°, adjustable by repositioning the front belt loop
- Belt loop sizes: 1.5” and 1.75” included
- Optics clearance: accommodates slide-mounted red dots and suppressor-height irons up to 0.5” tall
- Light compatibility: available in light-compatible and non-light-compatible models
- Retention: passive, screw-adjustable — no hood, strap, or button
The cant adjustment system is straightforward: the front belt loop can be moved to one of several positions, changing the angle of the holster relative to the belt line. At +10 degrees, the muzzle kicks slightly rearward, which tends to tuck the grip tighter against the torso — ideal for concealment under a jacket. Dialing to a more neutral or negative cant opens the grip for faster acquisition at the cost of slightly more printing.
For shooters running a red dot on their carry pistol, the Ironside’s optic clearance means no modification is needed. The holster accepts common optic footprints — Trijicon RMR, Holosun 507C/509T, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro — without interference during the draw or reholster.
Where the Ironside Does Not Belong
The Ironside is explicitly not recommended for use on over-the-pants battle belts like the Orion. It lacks the modular hole pattern found on the Ragnarok that interfaces with Safariland, Blade-Tech, G-Code, and other duty mounts. It cannot accept a UBL, a QLS fork, or a LINK mount. It is not designed for thigh straps, drop-leg platforms, or rapid-swap competition setups.
If you need an OWB holster for a war belt, a competition rig, a duty belt over a plate carrier, or any application that involves modular mounting, the Ragnarok is the correct tool. If you need an OWB holster that vanishes under a coat and lives on a standard pants belt, the Ironside is the correct tool. The two products share a design ethos — open-top passive retention, CNC-machined Kydex, adjustable retention screws — but they serve fundamentally different missions.
Ironside in the Concealed Carry Context
OWB concealment is a viable carry method that often gets overlooked by shooters who assume “concealed” always means IWB. In cooler climates, or for anyone who regularly wears an untucked button-up, flannel, or jacket, an OWB holster at 3–4 o’clock can be faster to draw from, more comfortable over long days, and just as concealable as appendix carry. The Ironside is purpose-built for this role.
The practical considerations for OWB concealment are covered in greater depth at OWB Concealment: When and Why, but the short version is: if you can cover the grip, you can conceal an OWB holster. The grip is the part that prints — not the muzzle, not the holster body. Because the Ironside’s thin Kydex and canted belt loops pull the grip into the torso, a mid-length jacket or even a loose flannel is usually sufficient to break up the outline. Shooters who struggle with appendix comfort due to body type, seated positions, or extended wear often find that a strong-side OWB setup like the Ironside solves their problem without sacrificing meaningful concealment.
Choosing Between the Ironside and an IWB Holster
For someone new to carrying, the default recommendation is almost always a quality IWB holster — it works year-round, in nearly every climate and wardrobe combination, with minimal lifestyle adjustment. The Sidecar 2.0 or a comparable appendix rig remains the most versatile single-holster solution for most people.
The Ironside enters the picture when a shooter has already established a carry habit and wants to expand their options. Common scenarios include:
- Seasonal carry: transitioning to OWB during fall and winter when heavier garments are standard
- Comfort over long days: all-day carry at a desk, in a vehicle, or on foot where IWB pressure against the skin becomes a factor
- Physical limitations: hip or back issues that make strong-side OWB more ergonomic than appendix
- Faster draw priority: shooters who train primarily from 3–4 o’clock and want their concealment rig to match their range mechanics
The Ironside is not a replacement for an IWB holster — it is a complement. Many experienced carriers rotate between the two depending on the day’s clothing, activity, and environment.
Summary
The T.Rex Ironside OWB is a thin-profile, CNC-machined Kydex holster designed for a single purpose: concealing a handgun outside the waistband on a standard pants belt. It trades the Ragnarok’s modular mounting capability for a slimmer shell, tighter body fit, and integrated belt loops that keep the pistol tucked against the hip. It accepts optics-equipped slides, offers adjustable cant and retention, and works with both light-bearing and non-light-bearing configurations. For shooters who carry in environments where outerwear is the norm, the Ironside fills a gap that neither a duty OWB holster nor an IWB holster addresses on its own.
