The bore receives chrome lining for corrosion resistance and extended service life, paired with Criterion’s honing and hand-lapping processes. Hand-lapping is what separates Criterion from most mil-spec barrel producers: after the bore is drilled, reamed, and rifled, the bore is polished by drawing a lead lap coated in abrasive compound through its full length. This removes tool marks and microscopic irregularities, producing a bore that is exceptionally uniform from breech to muzzle. Chambering, Twist, and Gas System

Both barrel lengths in the product line are chambered in .223 Wylde, a hybrid chamber that safely fires both 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington ammunition while maintaining a tighter throat geometry than a standard 5.56 NATO chamber. This means the barrel can run full-pressure defensive 5.56 loads and also wring better precision from match-grade .223 ammunition — useful for accuracy work at distance and zeroing.

The 1:8 twist rate is a versatile middle ground. It stabilizes the most commonly used projectile weights for 5.56/.223 — from lightweight 55-grain training rounds through 77-grain OTM match and barrier-blind loads. Heavier bullets like M855A1 and Mk 262 clones spin up well in 1:8 without the over-stabilization issues that can arise with very light bullets in faster twists.

Both the 16-inch and 13.9-inch configurations use a mid-length gas system. Mid-length gas delivers a softer recoil impulse and lower bolt velocity than carbine-length gas on barrels of this length range, reducing wear on the bolt carrier group and buffer system while improving the shooter’s ability to track sights through recoil. Gas ports are tuned to cycle reliably both suppressed and unsuppressed — a critical consideration for any rifle intended for defensive use, where the addition or removal of a suppressor should not require parts swaps or adjustment.

16-Inch CORE

The 16-inch barrel is the default choice for a general-purpose defensive rifle. It meets the legal minimum barrel length for a rifle under federal law without requiring a pinned muzzle device, which means the owner retains the flexibility to swap muzzle devices — flash hiders, compensators, or suppressor mounts — freely. The additional barrel length over shorter options provides a modest velocity increase with 5.56 ammunition, a longer sight radius if running fixed irons, and a fuller powder burn that reduces muzzle flash. 13.9-Inch CORE

The 13.9-inch barrel is designed to be paired with a pinned-and-welded muzzle device that brings the overall barrel-plus-device length to the legal 16-inch minimum. This configuration offers a noticeably shorter overall rifle length — improving maneuverability in vehicles, doorways, and confined spaces — while still running a mid-length gas system. The 13.9 sits in a sweet spot: shorter than a 14.5 with a pinned device, but long enough to avoid the gas system compromises and velocity penalties of 10.5- or 11.5-inch barrels. Barrel Life and Maintenance

Chrome-lined 4150 barrels in 5.56/.223 typically deliver 10,000–20,000 rounds of useful life before accuracy degrades noticeably, depending on firing schedule and how hot the barrel is allowed to get during strings. The chrome lining resists throat erosion and bore corrosion, which means the barrel maintains its accuracy window longer than an unlined bore would. Routine maintenance is straightforward: run a bore brush and solvent after range sessions to remove carbon and copper fouling, and inspect the gas port area periodically for carbon buildup. There is no special maintenance required for the chrome lining itself.

Selection Guidance

For most shooters building a first or primary defensive rifle, the 16-inch CORE is the simplest and most versatile choice. It requires no muzzle device commitment, runs all common 5.56 ammunition well, and offers the best velocity from the cartridge without excessive length.

The 13.9-inch CORE is the better option for shooters who have already chosen a specific suppressor mount or muzzle device they intend to pin and weld, and who prioritize a shorter overall package for vehicle use, home defense, or a more maneuverable general-purpose rifle. The commitment to a permanent muzzle device is the only real trade-off — once pinned, swapping devices requires a gunsmith.
