What Training Ammo Actually Needs to Do
Training ammunition exists to let a shooter put rounds downrange in volume without burning through expensive defensive or match-grade loads. For 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington rifles, that means cartridges that feed reliably, group well enough to diagnose shooter error rather than ammo error, and don’t damage the rifle or the range.
The relevant tradeoffs are price per round, brass quality, projectile construction, powder cleanliness, and whether the load will be allowed at the range a shooter actually intends to use. None of these are abstract: a case of ammo that prints 4 MOA, won’t cycle a suppressed gun, or gets pulled out of the magazine by a magnet at the firing line is not training ammo, regardless of what the box says.
Bulk FMJ: The Default
The standard training round is a 55-grain or 62-grain full metal jacket boat tail loaded into brass cases with non-corrosive, boxer-primed powder. Common options on the U.S. market include:
- 55gr FMJ (M193-style): The original 5.56 loading. Lightweight, flat-shooting inside 200 yards, and typically the cheapest brass-cased option available.
- 62gr FMJ (M855-style, “green tip”): Heavier projectile with a steel tip insert over a lead core. Issued as the U.S. military’s standard ball round for decades. Slightly better performance through intermediate barriers than M193.
- Commercial .223 Remington FMJ: Loaded to lower pressures than 5.56 NATO. Safe in any 5.56 chamber but will run slightly slower. A 5.56-marked rifle should not have trouble with .223 ammo; the reverse is not always true for older or tighter .223-only chambers.
For round-count drills — fundamentals work, draws, transitions, position changes, USPSA-style stage practice — any of the above will do the job. The shooter is working on technique, not load development.
Steel Case, Steel Core, and Range Rules
A significant share of historically cheap training ammo was steel-cased import (Wolf, Tula, Barnaul) and steel-core surplus. Both categories deserve a closer look before purchase.
Steel case ammunition uses a polymer- or lacquer-coated steel cartridge case instead of brass. It generally functions in AR-pattern rifles but with caveats: steel doesn’t obturate (expand to seal the chamber) the way brass does, which can lead to more carbon blow-by, dirtier chambers, and accelerated extractor wear. It also can’t be reloaded. Following sanctions and import restrictions, Russian-manufactured steel-case is no longer flowing into the U.S. market the way it did, and prices have shifted accordingly.
Steel core / bi-metal projectiles are the bigger practical issue. Many indoor and commercial outdoor ranges prohibit any ammunition that triggers a magnet test on the projectile. The reasons are real: steel cores damage steel targets, increase ricochet risk, and can start fires in berms. M855 with its steel tip insert, M855A1, and most surplus military ammo will fail the magnet test. Before buying a case of anything, a shooter should confirm what the destination range allows. A pallet of M855 that can’t be shot anywhere local is not a deal.
Brass-Cased Bulk and Reloading
For shooters who reload, brass-cased ammunition is the obvious choice. Once-fired 5.56 brass is one of the most available reloading components in the U.S., and the marginal cost-per-round on handloaded plinking ammo can drop well below factory pricing if the volume justifies the time investment.
Lake City brass — military production from the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant — is the benchmark. It’s thicker than commercial .223 brass, which means slightly reduced internal case capacity and the need to adjust load data accordingly, but it tolerates multiple reload cycles. PMC, Federal American Eagle, Winchester white box, and similar commercial brass-cased loadings are all reasonable factory options that also leave reloadable brass behind.
For a shooter who isn’t reloading and doesn’t intend to start, brass case versus steel case mostly comes down to range rules, rifle wear preferences, and whatever the price spread happens to be on a given week.
Matching Ammo to the Training Goal
Not all rifle practice consumes ammunition the same way. The training plan determines what kind of ammo actually matters.
Fundamentals and dry-fire-adjacent drills. Site presentation, recoil management, position changes, reload mechanics — anything where the shooter is isolating one variable and working it on paper. Bulk 55gr FMJ is fine. The shooter is the limiting factor, not the load.
Stage work and movement drills. USPSA-style stages, multi-position courses of fire, and movers like the kind described in T.Rex range footage where a target zips in from 300 meters to 100 — these still don’t demand premium ammo, but they do demand reliability. A failure to feed mid-stage wastes the rep. Reputable brass-cased FMJ from a known manufacturer is worth the small price premium over the cheapest available option.
Zeroing and confirming holds. This is where bulk training ammo’s limits show. A 3-4 MOA bulk load will obscure shooter-induced error and make zero confirmation imprecise. For zeroing a duty optic or confirming dope at distance, shooters should use the same ammunition they intend to actually fight or compete with — or at minimum, a load with consistent velocity and a known POI offset from the duty round.
Suppressed shooting. Some bulk loads run dirty enough through a suppressor to be unpleasant. M193-spec 55gr FMJ generally suppresses fine in a properly gassed gun. Lighter varmint loads and underloaded commercial .223 may not cycle reliably under a can.
Storage and Lot Consistency
Buying ammunition by the case rather than the box has two practical advantages beyond price: lot consistency and long-term storage. Rounds from the same lot will have closer velocity and POI characteristics than rounds pulled from boxes manufactured months apart. For a shooter running a year-long training plan, buying enough of one lot to cover that plan eliminates a variable.
5.56 with sealed primers and case mouths — common on military-spec loadings like M193 and M855 — stores well in sealed cans for decades when kept dry and at stable temperature. Commercial loadings without primer/mouth sealant store fine for normal civilian timeframes but are more vulnerable to humidity over the very long haul.
The Honest Summary
For most shooters running an AR-pattern rifle at a typical range, the answer is straightforward: brass-cased 55gr or 62gr FMJ from a reputable manufacturer, bought by the case when prices are reasonable, with the duty or defensive load reserved for zeroing and periodic confirmation. Steel case is acceptable if the range allows it and the rifle tolerates it. Steel core is mostly off the table at commercial ranges. Surplus deals are worth chasing only after confirming the round is legal where it’ll actually be shot.
Training ammunition is a logistics problem more than a performance problem. The round only has to be good enough that the shooter — not the ammo — is the thing being tested.
