Why the Stock Choice Matters
The collapsible stock on a carbine-length AR-15 sits at the intersection of fit, repeatability, and weight. A stock that wobbles on the receiver extension shifts cheek weld between shots; one that’s too short or too long for the shooter’s kit forces compromises in mounting and recoil management. The categories that matter for most users are: profile width (which drives cheek weld), how tightly the stock locks to the buffer tube, sling attachment options, and weight.
All of the stocks discussed here fit MIL-SPEC carbine receiver extensions. Commercial-diameter tubes are rare on quality builds and should generally be replaced rather than accommodated.
Magpul CTR
The Magpul CTR is the baseline against which most other AR stocks are measured. It is a slim, lightweight collapsible stock with a friction lock lever that removes most of the wobble between the stock and the buffer tube — a meaningful upgrade over a plain M4 waffle stock. The CTR has rear and side QD sling sockets, a rubber buttpad, and a low profile that keeps the rifle compact when collapsed.
It does what a stock needs to do without adding mass or complication. For shooters who run a low-mounted optic and want the lightest practical option, or for builds with folding adapters where a wider stock would interfere, the CTR is hard to beat.
B5 Systems BRAVO
The B5 BRAVO sits between a slim CTR-style stock and the wider SOPMOD profile. It is shorter and slimmer than the SOPMOD but offers a wider cheek weld than a CTR, making it a useful “best of both worlds” option for shooters who want a more substantial cheek weld without the bulk and weight of full storage compartments.
Specifications:
- Weight: 9.3 oz
- Length: 7.2 in
- Width: 2.0 in
- Height: 4.9 in
Features include internal tensioners (which take up the slop on the buffer tube), overmolded one-piece steel anti-rotational QD sling mounts, color-matched steel hardware, a non-slip cushioned buttpad, and B5’s improved suregrip stock latch. The rear is angled to encourage consistent shoulder placement. It uses MIL-SPEC materials and finishes throughout. Made in the USA.
B5 Systems Enhanced SOPMOD
The Enhanced SOPMOD is B5’s improved take on the CRANE SOPMOD pattern issued on military carbines. It carries two water-resistant storage compartments that each hold three CR123 batteries or similar-sized items — useful for spare optic and light batteries on a duty or class rifle. The added width of those compartments also produces an excellent cheek weld for shooters running optics at typical AR mount heights.
Specifications:
- Weight: 11.8 oz
- Length: 7.4 in
- Height: 4.9 in
Features mirror the BRAVO: anti-rotational QD sockets, suregrip latch, color-matched steel hardware, non-slip rubber buttpad, MIL-SPEC fitment. The trade-off versus the BRAVO is roughly 2.5 oz of extra weight and a wider profile in exchange for storage and a fuller cheek weld. Made in the USA.
BCM GUNFIGHTER Stock (Mod 0)
The BCMGUNFIGHTER stock is BCM’s slim-profile option. It drops the extended cheek weld of the SOPMOD-pattern stock for a thinner shape, which is particularly useful on rifles with folding adapters where stock width determines how flat the gun folds against itself.
Features:
- Polymer construction
- Snag-free profile with no sharp edges that catch slings or gear
- Modular: six parts and one screw allow reconfiguration
- Two ambidextrous sling mounting options, including QD swivel sockets
- Integrated rubber buttpad
Made in the USA. Like all BCM products, this stock cannot ship outside the US.
BCM GUNFIGHTER SOPMOD Stock
The BCM SOPMOD stock is the wider-profile variant of the GUNFIGHTER, designed for a more pronounced and consistent cheek weld. It shares the same polymer construction, snag-free design, modular six-part architecture, ambidextrous QD sling sockets, and integrated rubber buttpad as the standard GUNFIGHTER.
The choice between the two BCM stocks is the same conversation as BRAVO vs SOPMOD: slimmer profile and folding compatibility on one side, wider cheek weld on the other.
B5 Collapsible Precision Stock (CPS)
For builds where the carbine stock is a limiting factor — designated marksman setups, .308 ARs, or any rifle where the shooter wants to fine-tune length of pull and cheek height — the B5 CPS is a precision-oriented option that still fits standard carbine receiver extensions.
Key features:
- Independently adjustable cheek riser and length of pull, both with precision dials
- 10 internal tensioners
- Gross adjustment pull-down lever with lockout
- Underside M-LOK slots for accessory attachment
- Mounting slots for accessory cheekpiece
- Steel anti-rotational QD sling mounts
- Cushioned non-slip buttpad
It is offered in Long and Medium variants. The Medium is sized so the cheekpiece clears the charging handle even at the fully collapsed position — the right choice for a standard AR-15. The Long variant moves the cheekpiece rearward and is intended for rifles with side charging handles or folding adapters, where charging handle clearance isn’t a concern and the shooter benefits from more rearward cheek support.
Specifications:
- Weight: 23.36 oz (Medium), 23.68 oz (Long)
- Length: 8.5 in
- Width: 2.0 in
- Height: 4.35 in
The CPS is more than twice the weight of a BRAVO. That weight buys repeatable cheek height and length of pull, which matters for prone shooting, optics with tight eyebox, and rifles intended for precision use. It is overkill for a general-purpose carbine.
Choosing Between Them
A reasonable hierarchy for most users:
- Slim, lightweight, folder-compatible: Magpul CTR or BCM GUNFIGHTER (Mod 0)
- Wider cheek weld, no storage: B5 BRAVO or BCM SOPMOD
- Wider cheek weld with battery storage: B5 Enhanced SOPMOD
- Precision use with adjustable cheek and LOP: B5 CPS (Medium for standard ARs, Long for side chargers and folders)
Stock weight differences across the non-precision options are measured in a few ounces and rarely drive the decision — profile, cheek weld, and how the stock interacts with folding adapters or side chargers usually do. All of these stocks are made in the USA, fit MIL-SPEC carbine receiver extensions, and offer QD sling attachment in some form.
